Because we still have a dream…

Forty-three years ago today, Martin Luther King, Jr. was fatefully shot and killed, but not before he left his mark on Earth.

I’ve taken many speech and rhetoric courses where I have been assigned to watch his “I have a Dream” speech.

It wasn’t until this year during my Civil Rights class where I finally understood the meaningful words he spoke. They brought tears to my eyes because there is still much left to conquer.

This past semester I have focused on my sociology minor. Many of the courses deal with race relations and racial tensions that still shake us to our core today.

Raised in Miami where the majority of the population is Hispanic, I never had to deal with overt racism. From my vantage point, it seemed like we all got along. But, the reality in other parts of the country is different.

My thoughts on race and racism will be left for another blog post.

Today, I just wanted to remind people that Martin Luther King, Jr. is a hero and to leave you with my favorite part of one of his speeches, the one he gave the night before his assassination.
