Slippery sidewalks and overcrowded coffee shops

February 5, 2011

My roommate and I decided we needed to take advantage of Boston’s beautiful day before it starts snowing tomorrow.

I’ve been in hibernation mode because it’s cold, wet and slippery outside. This is unacceptable to a girl from Miami.

Image is self-explanatory.

We decided to head to Harvard for some study/applying to job time. I figured as a world-renowned institution they might offer free Wi-Fi to the public. I was wrong. We found ourselves in a comfortable study room, with couches and beautiful snowy views, getting ready for a marathon session of concentration and productivity.

Until we realized we needed an ID to log in.

We reluctantly left the comfort of heat and couches for the adventurous walk to a coffee shop in Harvard Square.

I’m so used to having Internet at the reach of my fingertips that now I take it for granted.

Which led me to think about people and children who aren’t as lucky and have no access to information. Realistically, these people probably don’t miss it because they’re used to not having it. But, still wouldn’t it be nice to know that kids everywhere were capable of searching Google for answers.

“Education, then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of man…” -Horace Mann, education reformer.

According to the Washington Post, the number of people in America with Internet is growing, but some pockets still don’t have access.

With education reform such a big part of the administration agenda, more available access to Internet  should be part of that.

Our marathon study session has come to an end.

Now we’re in the search for food.

Now, I’ll leave you with quotes from people far more articulate than myself.
“Education is a companion which no future can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate it and no nepotism can enslave.” -Ropo Oguntimehin

Robert Frost
“Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper.” -Robert Frost
